Mr. Jack - Chapter One

And then Jimmy, Jedidiah King and myself raised a
toast to Jackson. We clinked our glasses and then I closed
my eyes and drank. And as I drank, I felt that sharp
whiskey burn in my throat on the way down. Then the burn
passed and I opened my eyes and I looked at the bottom of
my glass and that's when it hit me. I'd seen him in his
casket not more than an hour ago but when I looked down at
my empty glass it all became real.
Then everything felt tight, the room, my clothes.
I couldn't stay inside and I told Jimmy I needed to go
for a walk.
	"You ok Val?" He asked.
"I just need to get some air," I told him. I then said
good night to Jedidiah in case he'd gone to bed when I got
in and I told him I'd see him at the service tomorrow.
Out on Henry Street, I turned left, towards the
Williamsburg Bridge, out of habit. I took a couple of steps
then I stopped and I stood there and I watched the red
lights on top of the west tower of the bridge fading on and off.
